Stereo Crackles

Definitely ground it. If it still makes noise Radio Shack makes a nice fat filter that goes in the power line.

i was a strereo installer for a few years, and i would say ground, and a inline noise suppressor too.

I tried grounding it in different places, but to no avail. I've been reading up on the problem, and it seems like the spark plug wires could be the culprit. I'm going to try to test them one by one, but first I've got a question. Is it alright to pull off one wire at a time while the car is running? Like, I'll pull one off the distributor, go listen to the stereo, then go back, put it back on, and take the next one off. That way it will never be idling on less than 7 cylinders. Is that method going to hurt the motor at all?

It won't hurt the motor...but it may knock the sh*t out of you......try grounding the harness with a new wire and not using the factory ground

Alright, thanks.

Alright, so I tried unhooking one spark plug wire at a time, and it did nothing. Right now, I have the stereo out of the dash, but all hooked. I have the unit itself, as well as the ground wire from the unit attached to a 10 gauge wire, and I've tried grounding that wire many places, including the frame near the door, the ground cable that runs from the alternator bracket to the battery -, etc. No matter where it's grounded, it crackles. So now I'm sure theres something wrong with the 12v coming into the unit. Does anybody know what kind of inline noise suppressor, capacitor, etc I could use to filter out the spikes that might be causing the noise? Any links to ones on the internet?

i think it might be as simple as changing battery cables.

The noise is completely gone when the car isn't running. As soon as it is, the noise is back.

Older HEI's had radio interference supression (rfi) capacitors. These are located under the rotor usually to the left of where the wires(that hook to the coil) come out of the dist. they are pretty cheap and can be found at any auto parts store. i really would try this before i bought an in-line supressor since you had this cracking even before you put the new radio in
