Stock 350 question

SBO, SBB or SBC?

Really depends on what heads, final CR & cam you have planned. Also, how long you expect it to last.

Depends on which STOCK 350 your talking about. I have a stock 350 short block (L-82) w/chevy 2.02 iron heads, runs 11.20's

The stock sbc short block in an El Camino. I don't know what heads can or intake. what's your setup lilbowtie? if you feel like sharing

Am I correct in assuming my 350 has a two bolt main while yours has a 4 bolt?

Yes, if it is stock. 4 bolt mains were only used in high stress (3/4 ton trucks or vans) or high power applications like corvettes and muscle cars from 1967 into the 1980s. The only difference is the main caps have 4 bolts instead of two. If you don't wing it past 5500rpm a lot with a lot of power in it, 400+, two bolt is fine.
With a chevy 350, bored .030 over, shave/port the heads or get an edelbrock top end kit, and get flat top pistons with valve reliefs, a cam with .500 lift or less, (in the top end kit) and 400hp is pretty attainable. On stock bottom end. Turn it into a 383 and the sky's the limit. BUt if you go that route you might as well just get a 4 bolt block and build that on the side while still putting around in the elco.

And if you're keeping it in the el camino, traction loss is your worst enemy. New bushings back there, box the arms or get tubular adjustable ones. New shocks and springs, fat tires, beef up that 7.5 inch 10 bolt. Or get a 12 bolt from a 68-72 CHEVELLE. Not a skylark or a cutlass. Or a ford 9 inch. idk about where you live, but where I live there are always pre done ford 9 inch rears with the g body brackets on craigslist from all the stock car guys.

OK. I think that's what I'll do. I live in central Texas and I'll look into the rear ends. I'll try and start accumulating parts.

2 questions, what's your budget and what do you have to start with?

Your stock short block might be a 267 or 305 - if that's the case, then you need to find something else as the power potential with either is pathetic unless you go really exotic which equates into ALOT of money. Starting from scratch, you can figure on $10/HP - 350 HP equates into $3500. Having a fully functional 350 short block (doesn't need rebuilding) can easily knock $1500-2000 off from that depending on your goal. If you're looking for 450HP, then you'll need a fatter wallet.
