I got a call from my buddy today. Someone stole his '81 Cutlass Cruiser wagon right off of his driveway. He didn't even know the car was gone until he got a call from the sheriff's office at 6:30 AM. They asked him if he knew where his car was, he said yeah, on my driveway. They said "NO", they just recovered it. Apparently it was blocking someones driveway. They ran out of gas and left the car there. They broke the column, punched the driverside lock and they were off.
Fortunately he got the car back. He just had to add gas and started it the same way these pricks did.
They only took a set of jumper cables from the car...that was it.
I told him that he was lucky he got the car back. He was out there trying to locate a replacement column. He said there was no G-body cars in the junkyards. After a few calls he located one for $70.00.
I think it's time I took precautions to keep my car from getting boosted. It just goes to show you no one's car is safe these days.

When I read the title I thought I was going to hear about your wagon. It's good he got his car back and I'll be putting a switch for the fuel pump when I put the efi in this winter...

Thanks Steve.
It's his work, and all around town transportation. I think he's going to be adding some theft deterrents. we've had this conversation before. He's rethinking this, especially that he plans to repaint the car.
I'm seriously going to take some measures. I would hate like hell to put the work and money into the car for it to vanish into the night.
Apparently, they must have pushed the car off the driveway. I'm sure he would have heard it start up.

It sounds like the police aren't going to be investigating this is he was permitted to drive the car away...

They let him take the car after it was completely finger printed. They let him take the car. Fortunately, he was able to gas it up and drive it away.
I suppose if it was involved in a serious crime: robbery, shooting, hit and run, etc. the car would have been impounded for evidence.

I hope they catch these guys, it's not like we can head off to a car lot to pick up an identical or even similar car...

I'm thinking it could be a auto theft ring. Ironically, the police got a call about a stolen car that was reported in the same area my friend's car was found. I guess they needed a getaway car.
I'm thinking if it was initially stolen for the parts, the car would have been in a garage somewhere being stripped. It sounded more like it was used for a joy ride.

Glad to hear the car was recovered.

I'm really thinking about shaving the doors on mine and just have a backup lock somewhere on my GP.

God forbid I ever see someone attempting to steal my car. I have acres and acres of woods behind my house to hide what's left of them.

Shaving the doors really wont stop them cause they'd just break the window. I think having a removable steering wheel is probably the best deterent to theft....at least they couldnt drive it away.
