I really need a new exhaust. What do you guys think an auto shop might charge to install dual straight pipes on my 86 monte. Anyone had someone do it at a shop before? Id expect around 400-500 prolly easy?

Back in the summer of '01, I had straight pipes installed on my first El Camino.

I supplied a new cat, and they installed it and bent up the pipes behind it going all the way out the back with some 3" tips. Cost me $300 (not including the cat.) or so if I recall correctly, but that was seven and a half years ago.

probably better off with a kit ( it would be cheaper and better flowing anyways ) from Jegs or Pypes. Even if you have to pay someone to install it.

Are you running dual exhaust or a cat-back ? Cat-convertors will cost a bunch more.

With the right muffler you can flow just about the same as straight pipe, and sound better to boot.

im

just runnin the single rusty *ss exhaust at the moment. i had a muffler put ona year ago onto the rusty pipe and I knew it would last about a year. Im just lookin at the cheapest dual exhaust system to go.

Okay, you are obviously on a budget.

Dude, you can put this kit together in your driveway with hand tools. Or you can pay an exhaust shop to put it on for you....

It's the Jeg's brand header back dual 2 1/2" kit and it's 205 dollars. That leaves enough money in your budget to buy the headers too, if you want.

Once you rip off all of your exhaust and mount this up, one quick trip to the exhaust shop will have them make two down pipes to go from your manifolds to the pipes. It's too easy....

For you emissions legal guys, here is the cat back system for 300 bucks:

And for the Flowmaster lovers (like me) there is the Grand National system from them with the 80 series crossflow muffler (like my Firebird uses) that puts the tailpipes on either side behind the rear tire - just like I like it.

This one is 320 bucks.

Now, you can bolt this stuff on yourself and then have the exhaust shop weld it, or whatever. That is usually what I do.

I paid $400 about a year ago to have my 78 Malibu done. It was a true dual exhaust, x crossover, and 40 series flowmasters.

Ive got a guy in Stanton, KY that guarantees his work and is the best any where around with exhaust. The guy is Joey and the shop is Joey's Muffler Shop. ITs a one bay garage when you first come into Stanton. He charged me $150 for dual 2.25" exhaust, with glass pack mufflers and chrome tips(echo chambers) back about 9 years ago on my Cutlass. He has done the exhaust on the Supra as well. I supplied the muffler and he fabricated 3" aluminumized exhaust from my downpipe back with a flange to bolt it to my downpipe for $90. Hes the best exhaust guy I know of anywhere. If you would like directions if youre in the neighborhood let me know. You have to get there very early to get in. Ive been up there on Saturday mornings at 5am to have work done and there is a line forming for when he opens at 730!!! And some of these people drive a long way to have him do the exhaust. I met a couple of people from central Indiana while I was there. Great guy to do business with if you can make the drive.

damn guys

thanks for all the help. im still a bit hung over at the moment but I really appreciate all the help. Im going to check out that Jegs website right now. So I should definitely think about getting some mufflers ya think? and them headers? 😀 im a bit confused though, is that exhaust system for the headers or is that the exhaust system itself. If so how much more are the headers?? id like to get them too if its not much more, lastly can I get headers for my v6 4.3, I am unable to find any on that jegs website?

I have heard that the Edelbrock TES for the 4.3 in the S10 Blazer will work, I think you can get those for less than 200 bucks.

There are expensive hooker headers available as well, but for your stock engine your manifolds will be fine. Just have the exhaust shop make the pipe from your manifold to the header back system.
