Swap regular instrument cluster for rally style

The console cars didnt have the gear indicators. The column cars did. I have a column ralley cluster, but ended up breaking the wire that connects to the column when I pulled it out.

I'm not familiar with the Cutlass dash, but Chevy and Pontiac used a black plastic cover to hide the shift indicators on manual/console cars. Remove it and there they are.

Mark,
That's exactly what I was thinking?

I think so Jack, why would the others be different? And the indicator is moved by a steel cable that clips to the bowl. It may not be broken, usually the clip just pulls off and dangles. A pair of longnose pliers can get it back on.

I opened one up and there is a place for the string to go and there is a cover but there is no string or needle or anything that says PRNDSL. I'll investigate further and see if I can figure out a way to put a needle and string from a normal instrument cluster into it and make it work. Thanks for mentioning this. There is still hope.

You can get rally guages with or with out shift indicators i have floor shift cars with the indicator and cars that dont. The shift indicator is run by the steering column so its just options that decided weather it got the shift indicator. I have seen lots of the little cables brake that run the indicator. Idk but you might be able to put an indicator in the guages if you found the parts to do it. As far as the guages being accurate i think thats luck of the draw i have some cars that work good and others that were off a little.

Doing this conversion today

1) the instructions ( ref Gmail article) calls for a pink/blk ignition wire on each connector (no5 conn:1 and no10 conn 2 )
instead of one like in original regular cluster (conn 2 no12 position )

do you just splice the wire and add one to the other connector ?

2) having only a dk green wire in orignal harness (no1 conn 2 ) for coolant temp indicator ,
gauge cluster calls for a dkgreen/yellow wire on coolant temp ind. (no 4 conn 1 ) and dk green/white (no7 conn 2 ) but there is no such wire in the harness ...what to do ?

nothing mentionned in article on this .....;-(

thanks for the input .....
hope to get some replies from someone who made the swap !

Dan ,

Dan ,

1) IIRC that's what I did... It's been a few years though so I'm a little fuzzy there.... I'd have to pull my cluster back out to be sure..... Lucky for you I have a different tach to swap in and that might just happen sometime soon. 8)

2) You just use the plain dark green one from the coolant temp indicator. (which is method 1 in the article)
