ok i got a couple different issues so please bear with me.

fired the my rebuilt 355 today for 1st time and headers got so hot that my jegs powr wires were smoking!? i think i need to get shorty plugs so i have more clearance but where can i get some boots for 90* plug ends? dam headers are cheap hooker comps that i have had to bed so many times them + other items around them for clearance!?

only ran it for 32 minutes today then shut it off. so would i change filter next then go again for 30 min or change oil + filter?

exhaust sounds nice with open header with turn downs but even with ear plugs the droan is annoying.

car cannot move right now. i have a fresh heavy 700r4 transmission on it but i have no linkage yet to connect to the shift linkage. where can i get some linkage orderd up for i have no junkyards around me nor the time.

and lastly, i have a performer rpm intake on it and this linkage adapter for tv cable and throttle.

http://www.compperformancegroupstores.c ... ode=376700

but my problem is that the vaccum port is in the way and i dont see a way to modify the bracket to hookup the vacum stuff. maybe i can find a stock throttle/tv bracket off a 80's chevy caprice or something similar but uggghhhh!?

if anyone can help with any info or advice is extremely appreciated. i wish to get it fully running for this weekend. i only started this whole project back in august of 2007 :x

couldn't run car today, turns out 2 wires were burned up by the headers pretty bad. so i didn't even attempt it. where could i guy find cheap shorty plugs for the old style sbc heads?

trans should be taken care of since i called up bowtie overdrives in so cal near my old residence and oredered up some linkage and tv brackets but i'm still hunting for a stock gm tv bracket.

ok guys i can get by on the other stuff as listed above but this next problem has me stumped. i rewired the harness from by the distributor down to the starter eliminating the fusable links and instead of them i added fuses and their located right by trans dipstick for easy access. for some reason i keep blowing 1 of them and its a 30 amp fuse every time i shut the car off after running it and key off. then no guages or anything powers up inside the car except for the key in ignition buzzer  this includes no starter until i replace the fuse. i have noticed that with a fresh fuse my volt gauge shows 12v but when the car fires up she shoots! :!: way over 18v and is pegged over  . now wtf could that be? its only when it runs then pops fuse. altenator was fine before motor teardown. i am pretty competent in wiring so i don't think i ****ed anything. is it possible that their is a bad ground or one missing? only grounds i know of is the batt to alt bracket, batt to fender chasis, and firewall to back of driver side cylinder head. now i do have my accesorie brackets painted so could the alt. be missing a ground from bracket contact to its case? yes all 3 wires(2/1) are hooked up to the altenator.

thanks for anyhelp 😀

accel shorty plugs can be had at autozone for under 30 bucks. also they will sell individual wires. just go in and let them know what you need exactly.

stuff

could it be that something with the starter or alt. is tweaked since i gave them a quickie bath a while ago to degrease them then let them air dry after using a blow gun(air nozzle). no water but i used a parts washer bin. would the solvent mess with it?

looking up part number for shortie plugs online now................

I don't think it's in the starter....it's got to be something basic if it pops right away....you need to start with that lead and see what wires that are powered by it....

no thats not it. its not a direct short. with a fresh fuse without firing the engine so the altenator doesn't go beserk i can turn the key all i want and power everything works. its only when i start the engine then the alt kicks in you know and the power spikes but the fuse won't pop until i turn the key off. i think that line may be over maxed on amps but it maybe or maybe not a different problem in relation to the alt. giving me over
18v dc. i'll try running it off a batt charger tomorrow without an alt. hooked up and see what happens then maybe swap alt for the hell of it.

i'll check over the grounds too and maybe add a few to test if anything changes.

issues

well, i have 3 lines that go to the starter. 2 used to go together into 1 fusable link and other was by itself into another fusable link. i just seperated them individually and put inline 30 amp fuses that i can get at by the dist and trans dipstick. i used new 10ga line and fuse holders maybe be 10ga too or their 12ga.

how many amps does an aftermarket msd/petronix ignition pull? or the starter solenoid? those 2 things should be the only 2 things pulling power cause everything else is off. i'll see if i can get a holder off some bigger fuses or tie the leads together maybe.

i'll compare what i had to what should still be stock on my 84 mc.

how rich is the car running?

on my old monte carlo, many years ago (miss that car🙁 )
I had the middle 2 tubes on my head glowing orange, bright about 6 inches worth of them, during a burnout comp, my car was way too rich.
