Not sure about Fbody since I don't have one right now but the S10 version is 18" from block to center of shifter. Just measured one on my shop floor.
 
Also be aware that the S10 version is different in the front. You'll need to shorten the end of the input shaft about 5/8" IIRC and a specific clutch disc is necessary to match the 14 spline 1". The 11" disc is an Astro van listing. I can't remember what the listing for the 10.5" is off the top of my head but it was available through Otts Friction in Portland.

Or, you could take the guts from an Fbody transmission and put them in an S10 case. That would give you closer ratios and more traditional clutch options.
 
Maybe. I've never actually done it. I seem to remember reading something about a transfer/drain tube that need to stay with the tailhousing. It's been a while since I did any research but the info is out there. I was thinking about doing that on my pickup project but decided to use a different transmission.
