Preload def wasn't set the most recent rebuild which came from a GM dealer, didn't have any spacer set in there which I think was part of the problem

That'll do it. Thing to remember is at this point they're all old and in used condition are likely in need of being gone through anyway. That's where you can give them a once over, sprinkle in the good parts, and they should be good for a while after that.
 
Maybe I should rephrase.

If they are stock, rebuilt properly, shifted properly with a clutch that has a clean release, then they are the best manual transmission ever made.
