I'm still not understanding why you are dead set on using the side marker lights instead of the taillight/brakelight existing wiring... if you use the side markers, you'd still have to run a wire from the brakelight somehow, along with the wiring for the individual turn signals, and wiring for the reverse lights (if you still intend to use them...)
Your obviously not familiar with a 79 Elky taillight. As I've said 2 small 2wire lights ARE the 3rd taillight.

So, either hook up the brake/turn, or not. It's pretty simple. Are the Elky 3rd tails 194s or something?
Personally, in this day and age of distracted drivers, I want as many filaments in the back as I can get....

I am hooking up the brake/turn signal and back up light. My original question was how to install a regular socket in place of the 2 small ones.

Sorry, but I can't be the only one confused. What are "the 2 small ones"? 194s? That's easy- get out the Dremel, and make 1157 holes...
1156s? 1157 sockets may fit. Or, maybe newer style 4157 or 3157 sockets.
Google is your friend.

The 2 small lights are acualy the same kind of socket as a side marker light, but with 2 wires each. What wires do I eliminate to install a regular socket?

I'll make this real simple. GM light colors are:
Brown = parking light
Green or Yellow = brake turn
Black = ground
Don't know reverse, but you'll only have one color left...
Have fun
