Today I got the Monte running again after sitting untouched under a cover since early November. I let the engine idle for about 5 minutes then I revved it alittle maybe reaching 4k max. After I shut it off I heard this loud tapping noise that sounded like it was coming from the valve cover. It literally sounded like someone lightly tapping the inside of the valve cover with a screwdriver. What can this be? The engine had great oil pressure with 65psi at 800-900rpm(idle). The tapping lasted for about 2 minutes and gradually got slower before stopping. I recorded about 13 seconds worth on my phone but im not sure how to upload audio files. This is a 400 sbc.

Without actually hearing the sound my guess would be just the normal sound of the metal during expansion/ contraction due to heat. I've had plenty of cars that have done this over the years. As the metal cools down, the sound slows and eventually stops.

I thought it was pretty normal to hear noise after shut down but it just seemed to loud and lasted too long. I cant get the audio to upload at the moment. I have heard it could be a sign of a leaky lifter?

that is a lifter bleeding down some just do it never had a problem with any i have owned that did that dave
