Has anyone done a tbi to carb engine swap??? Im swapping a 305tbi to a 350 carb. I know i need fuel pressure regulator, but what else to worry about. Thanks

That is really about it. Ritter and I swapped a 305tbi for a 350 carbed years and years ago in his firebird. I cannot remember all the specifics but I believe we for sure had to change to an HEI distributor and put a fuel pressure regulator on. Not a shitty cheap one either. Spend the money for a quality unit. If I can remember anything else I will let you know or maybe ritter will chime in.

can i run a mechanical pump with the stock lines and pull through the sending unit?
You can, but I wouldn't do it :!: With the intank fuel pump you will never have to worry about starving your engine for fuel  I would strongly recommend the Mallory return style fuel pressure regulator and a cheap in-line fuel gauge (after the regulator). The only other thing that you need to do is get an HEI distributor. You will also need to get a torque converter lockup switch, I believe your car has a lockup style torque converter and the computer controls that.

the 350 is already complete w/ distributor, wires, ect., so thats not a problem. as far as the lockup, i was either gonna go with the switch or a rebuilt th350 i can get and sacrifice the overdrive (200r4). im gonna be running pretty low (3.08) gears so i should be ok, but im not for sure yet which way imma go, thanks

And also, where do you run the return line for the regulator? Does it just go down the frame back to the tank? Im not really sure how that works.

RITTER nailed it. Mallory 4309 is what I used. Why go backwards on the fuel system? They don't put mechanical pumps on new Corvettes.  On the return line I ran mine along the frame. I bought an inexpensive aluminum fuel line roll at Jegs and ran it back from where I mounted the fuel pressure regulator to the tank. Cheap & easy but use common sense in your routing & securing of it. You could mount the fuel pressure regulator by the tank and just run one line up but that makes adjusting it difficult and it eliminates the option of having your fuel pressure guage on a hose that you can put under the windshield wiper on occasion to check your fuel pressure through a WOT blast. I mounted my regulator on the front of the passenger side frame right behind the radiator with the little bracket they supplied.

Why go backward on the transmission? Stock many 200-4Rs were paired with 2.56 gears with the 307 in the Cuttys. Its lighter and more efficient ie it consumes less power to run. Plus you retain the ability to put lower gears in the rear for a dramatic increase in acceleration without sacrificing mpg & motor saving revs on the hwy. Naturally a quality shift kit like the one http://www.ckperformance.com sells would help it live and make the shifts quick & firm and would be easy to have done while you have it out. If you want to raise the WOT shift points this guy builds VB valvebodys. http://extremeautomatics.com/transmissions/2004r.html If the 200-4R is FUBAR and you already have a th350 and your satisfied with the compromises it brings then ok you can't beat free when money is tight.

what you saying makes alot of sense. Ill probably rebuild the 200r4 and run a lockup switch. As for the fuel return ill probably run the line right alongside the original, but then how do i get it in the tank???

If you already have a TBI car you should have the hookup already in your tank. In fact you probably already have a return line from the fuel rail that could be reused leaving no need to buy a return line. You should also have a vent line ie three lines coming out of the tank. I am assuming someone previously converted a gbody tank & fuel system to work with the 305 TBI or that the car already was a factory 4.3 TBI car that they just swapped out the 4.3 for the 305.
