I've read that before too. I prefer the 200-4R myself but it's still just like the Chevy vs Ford debate when it comes to comparing it with a 700-R4. There's tons of write-ups and personal opinions that go either way.

Thanks for the link

interesting for sure. I have not read this one, but have seen other similar write ups that both agree and disagree like g body vet said.

I have had several 700's and they have worked well for me, but the next one will be a 200 if I can locate one. I think the smoother 1-2 ratio justifies a try, especially with low/mid power range engines.

thanks for the link

Why would anyone wanna use a 700r4 when you have to get the driveshaft shortened, at least the 200r4 is a direct fit....

X2

They put a million 700's in cop cars for years, then those cars were driven into the ground as Taxi's .(200-400 thousand miles of hard city driving.)
I have a 700 out of a 91 9c1 cop car in my El Camino. it is a pretty heavy duty inside ,has more clutches than a standard one .
I worked a a Cadillac dealer for many years I remember the 2004r's piled up like cord wood in the Trans Dept.
Cadillac's back then only had HT4100 engines, and a few 307's. and they were tearing the guts out of the 2004r.
When the RWD Brougham came out in 91 with a Injected Chevy 350 they stuck 700's in them,The 2004r's weren't up to the task.
The debate continues.

I think that some people just get in a mind set that one thing is better than the other and thats the only way. Both these transmission's are good when used for the right application. This seems to be the trend with almost everything car related. just
my two cents

Reflecting on what TC said, I have sh*t a few 200-4R's in the past myself although I still like them....just not in stock form. One was in my '85 SS, the other in my '87 Aero. I've also done a few trans jobs in Cutlasses with them. I also like the fact that they're the same length as short tail TH400's and share the same mounting point. If I don't have the funds for a quality 200-4R when my 455 is ready, I'll run a TH400 in the meantime. That way I only have to buy a crossmember once. I'll have to swap yokes on the driveshaft but it's easier than having to shorten it IMO.
