I know "the internet says" 350C is junk, but why?

Supposedly the input shaft is weaker. Smaller diameter, IIRC, for the lockup apparatus?

As said, the unique parts make it slightly weaker. If you have the TH250C, you have a spare input and pump. Most I have seen are the 250C, the BOP short tail is supposedly rare. The 350C trans I have seen most are the long tail sbc versions from trucks. The torque converter is also unique but high stall units are available, I still have a 2500 stall sitting around. I don't buy that they would be any amount slower for acceleration, with the same trans gearing and stall. I think most builders don't know the 350C so they avoid them. I might be hard to find the unique lock up solenoid, pump parts and input. My only failures with the TH250C/350C had nothing to do with the weaker input. I cooked first gear quick in my TH250C behind my Olds 403, it was a high mileage unit. The 2500 stall flashed right where it should at the track with slicks but was slow as sh*t with no first gear. The 300 rpm drop is nice especially if your gearing is on the high number side.

Sounds like you should find another transmission builder, a good one can convert the TH350C to a regular Th350. I have a built TH350C and I didn't use the lock up function. The main difference you'll have to deal with is converter selection and higher converter cost, I have an acc boss hog 2800-3200 and it cost about 450 bucks. There's not a huge selection. Also if you crack the bellhousing like I did you can't use a jw ultrabell because the converter depth is different so you'll be stuck finding a different case. But they can be built to handle abuse if you go to a reputable builder

Sound like a huge amount of wasted money since you did not use the lock up.
