The E-Rod Ls3 engine

Buy a new 4.8 shortblock. Add good heads for low compression and a turbo or two.

The real question for the OP is does the car have to be emissions compliant?

With a 5 or 6 speed the mpg is easy to get. With a 700 or a 60e, that goal may be attainable with a 3.23 or like gear, don't expect it with a 3.73.

Is the car gonna be just a driver? Looking to race on the weekends? My car was originally going to be just a driver but I started finding good deals on LS parts and now its a daily that I race on the weekends when I can.

You have to understand, the magazine ads concerning mpgs are stretching it to get the number. If you want to do 60-65 on the highway and get those numbers that's cool but its a lot more fun getting on it.

The OP needs to give more info on the car, state, budget, mechanical abilities, etc.

Absolutely. He never did say what the purpose was, budget or anything about emissions. I usually tend to think about my own situation when the blanks aren't filled in. Bad habit.

With the .67 of a 200-4R the 3.73 would have a final drive ratio of 2.49 not a bad ratio for mileage especially with a taller 28" tire like a common 275/60/15.

The main point of an E rod engine is that it is 100% legal LS swap for older emission era cars. Most junkyard LS swaps I have seen are not legal setups. A carbed LS in a G body is always illegal. Even an EFI LS lacking the emission systems it came with is still illegal. I know a lot of people like to get the cheaper truck LS motors but it is always illegal to swap a truck engine into a car or vice versa which is one reason they are cheaper. The E rods do cost more but they come with everything to make the install a legal setup. So if you live in a strict emission enforcement area like CA or NJ, then you will want the E rod. Most people who don't have the legal setups live in areas that poorly enforce emission laws for now.

True. In my state (Oregon) we have emissions testing for all cars 1975 and newer which would include every Gbody. Luckily there is no actual visual inspection aside from a mirror on a stick to verify that the cat is still present. The only testing is a tailpipe reading at idle and cruise for '75-'95. On '96-up it's just a scan test. No CEL = pass as long as all the readiness tests are complete. So, on an engine swapped Gbody, all you need to do is have cleaner tailpipe readings than the standards for the car's manufacture date. A good catalytic converter can cover a multitude of sins. It'd entirely possible to pass a blown big block in an '86 Monte Carlo given proper tuning. The DEQ staff are borderline retarded hybrids of DMV and Taco Bell employees. They are too lazy and untrained to really know what they're looking at anyway. All they know is the green pass light and the red fail light. I'm sure it won't be long until all of that changes and an E-Rod would be necessary. It's ALL about money. What started out as emissions testing to save the environment has turned into nothing more than a revenue generator.

I'm lucky living in Massachusetts and now Rhode Island my 78 doesnt have to do any kind of emission testing, only pass a easy safety inspection for lights, horns and rust.
In Mass the emissions cut off is 1983 and older, no emissions.
In RI the emissions cut off is 25 year old car, no emissions.

In NJ it;s the other way around, no safety inspections but they still have emission inspections which is really stupid.

That is so weird???
i remember the last time i had an inspection done in Mass, the only thing he did was hit my horn and put the head lights on, hit the brakes to check the lights, he never drove the car, started the car or anything. it took him longer to input the vin number and print out the results than the inspection did. It took him like 5 minutes before he figured out there was no bar code on the car to scan into the system??
