BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

I use compressed air to get the water out of the nooks and crannies.

You could always install wing cameras.

D,
I had a set of those (Monte Carlo) mirrors years back. I planned to put them on my wagon along with the El Camino mounting gaskets...they're angled correctly to fit the Malibu/ El Camino body line.
I decided to go more old school instead. That type of mirror does offer a better rear view capability than what I currently have on the car now, or even compared to the typical sport mirrors. I think they would look great on the car.

Other nice looking mirrors are the ones that were on other GM cars. They fit in the corner of the window frame...however, I don't know if it would work on a frameless window configuration.
I noticed the ones on my '95 Olds Ciera. Those would look cool on a G-body car, but it would probably require welding in a mounting plate/ pad/whatever in the corner.

Second thought. I looked at my Ciera today. I think those mirrors are meant for a sedan body style with a full window frame. Oh well, it was thought.

Like Scott, I'm also anxious to see what other goodies are bestowed on you. 😉

Nice mirrors Donovan. You can't go wrong using Monte Carlo parts. Lol

True that. Our wagon is full of MCSS parts (and Camaro parts and Corvette parts and....)

Thanks for the replies gents!
My apologies for the couple day's delay in responding, it's been another busy weekend for me.
Better late than never tho right, so here goes....!!

Nice! See Donovan, you already like the mirrors enough to give em a selfie thumbs up lol! I agree, of all the g body mirror offerings, those should fit the Naut better than the others. I too drive professionally, so i understand the importance of mirrors as jackass people don't care about big trucks...I'm always watching my mirrors.

It's always good when fellow members are helping each other out! I haven't personally bought anything yet from Kevin, but wouldn't hesitate to from all the kind words spoken of him.

I love gearhead deliveries, have had a couple this week already as you've seen, and several more to come as i acquire parts for this new mill of mine. This damn noodle of mine has some crazy ideas running rampant, and i hope to make said ideas concrete sooner than later! Can't wait to see what the better half got ya, and happy early bday!

Thanks Scott.
I agree with you my friend, if there's any mirrors that would suit The 'Naut, it would be these. I was quite surprised tho, when I got them in hand and compared them side by side with the conventional G body sport mirrors, they're quite different.
The standard sport mirrors have a longer pedestal on them and seem quite a bit smaller overall as compared to these ones. The new ones are definitely sportier looking tho, in my opinion.

Kevin is definitely the go-to man for G parts. I can't recommend him enough. Always good quality, good shape parts, with great communication and reasonable prices. If you ever need anything, I would not hesitate to give him a shout and see what he's got.

Congrats on the acquisition of your new mill again, and all the new deliveries that have started rolling in for ya. I've been keeping tabs on your build thread as always of course, and am drooling over all your new goodies right along with you.
I'm afraid I know next to nothing about LS engines, and turbo cam grinds etc tho, so unfortunately I haven't had much to contribute to this point. That doesn't mean I'm not interested, or stopped watching tho!
Still definitely tuned in. It's nice to see you getting parts together for a new engine finally!

I'll post up pics of Friday's delivery here in a bit, and thanks for the early birthday wishes. Appreciate it. You can wish me again on Wednesday, that's my actual birthday! 😉

No problem D. I knew enough about LS engines in the past to get me in trouble. However, in the last several months I've really been picking brains of people around me that have messed with them more than myself.
I have a cousin in Chicago that runs an auto repair shop, but has had some pretty nasty rides! His current daily is, i know i know, an STI with a boatload of mods that is really quick. But he has been in the LS game for quite some time. Hell, he wanted me to go LS probably 5 years ago but it just wasn't in the cards at the time.
I'm learning the turbo side of things as i go, and will pick and choose my parts to suit the 5.3. I've always been the guy to part a build together....might cost a little more in the end, but everything will be intended to work harmoniously with each other!

It's nice to have new parts, or gently used yard parts to cut costs rolling in. Honestly though, if it weren't for my dad needing a bunch of stuff for the gen1 swap going into his 90 wrangler, i wouldn't have switched. I made a very fair deal, actually lost some $$$ on parts because it's my dad and he has taught me most of what i know! That netted me some greenbacks to acquire the said goodies....I've stretched it out and it's almost gone for now, but i have TONS of other parts to sell...just need to take pics and post em for sale.

Btw, man your getting old😉!
Just kiddin D! Looking forward to the delivery update!

Donovan, I really can't imagine a truely street driven car without mirrors. I can appreciate a show car, but a driver is always what has truely struck my fancy. I really appreciate the work of guys like Chip Foose et al but I personally require door handles, door locks and mirrors. I'm a fairly blue collar kind of guy. That being said, your car is already a show-stopper. It will knock everyone out with or without mirrors, etc (and already does). Wait, did I address you by your first name? I apologize. I meant 'Mr. Riddler.'

Oh jeez, the Mr. Riddler thing again! You guys are gonna give me a complex!
Lol

Thanks for your input and point of view Jared. I agree, for the standard "street driven" ride, functional items like mirrors, handles, and locks are a necessity. Unfortunately, they're also unsightly IMO.

I was, and am still prepared to make some concessions regarding deleting some of these things, to get the look and vibe I'm looking for. The question becomes tho, should the mirrors really be one of them. Probably not, but I guess it all depends on personal preference and usage, as long as it doesn't affect safety. And therein lies the heart of the issue. It's not really safe to go without them. Any John Wayne type with a badge would probably bust me in a heartbeat if he noticed the absence of them. Is it worth the risk? I'm not sure yet. Still haven't made up my mind on that yet.
Like I said before, at least I have a set now, I can easily add them back on if need be. Once I make up my mind that is.
Lol

Olds Cool is likely coming apart here in a little bit for the vinyl roof removal and two tone. The stock mirrors will need to be removed and prepped for the second color, so I'm going to use that opportunity to test fit these new mirrors on the exact same body style as The Juggernaut.
I have my suspicions that the angle of the mirror pedestal is "off" for a Cutlass as compared to the Monte's they came on. I'm not concerned tho, I've already had a good look at it, and it should be easy enough to modify the base of the pedestals so they look right at home on the car.

Thanks for the considerations, and food for thought man!

Thanks Mike, appreciate the tips.

I wash (or used to anyways, before it came apart) the car at coin-op car washes, as I don't have a driveway or a paved alley to do it on here at the house.
The downside of that is, there's not too often a compressed air source at these places to do that with. If I use the mirrors, I'll have to just deal with drying the water dribbles off after they blow out on the road again, like the old days.
Lol

I've considered using a camera or cameras for that purpose, but technology ages so quickly. I don't want to have something installed that will look or be outdated inside 5 years or so. So I don't honestly see myself going that direction. Good option tho, thank you!

Thanks for the feedback Jack!

I agree, in looking at and comparing these new mirrors to the existing ones on Olds Cool, they seem to provide a larger rear view. The mirrors themselves are a far bit larger.

Before deciding that this style of mirror was the one I wanted to pursue, I made several trips to the auto wreckers, and just walked up and down the isles looking at and comparing mirrors. The shape, style, mounting of them, everything. There was just nothing that interested me, or that I could see suiting the car.

As you pointed out, most, if not all of the mirrors on newer cars all mount in the inside front corner between the "A" pillar, and the door belt moulding. Without a significant amount of fabrication, it would be very difficult to adapt that style of mirror to a frameless door like on my car.

It was a thought tho!

I received another delivery on Friday, I'll do a post on it here when I get a chance. As for the rest of the stuff that's coming, I'll post up on those too as they arrive!
