I had to trim fender lips and there is about 3/8” to frame on backside of tire

Sounds like what I have measured..car is not lowered, so hoping to avoid cutting pinchweld out...that just opens a can of corrosion worms. I'll go bacl to 255s before I'd cut on it

245/45/17 is what they recommend. I have the same rims, waiting on a buddy to paint them. The 255/45/17 look interesting, as they might fill up the wheel well better. I'm going for the same at all four, so I can rotate the tires.

When I first bought my Regal I put some ARE 15 x 8 rims on with Cooper 235/60 fronts and 275/60 rears, I liked how those sizes looked on there so when I installed my 17 x 8.5 rims I went with Nittos 235/50 front and 275/50 rear to match the height and width of my 15" rims.
I have always liked bigger rear tires on my Gbody's.

What series are those on the brown car? They remind a lot of the factory 87/88 Oldsmobile aluminum 14" rims. The ones online look more like factory Buick/TA rims.

You quoted the answer: ARE 15 x 8 rims with Cooper 235/60 fronts and 275/60 rears,
I assume you already know but the brown car is the black car

Is there room for more positive backspace? You can run the outside to fender pretty close. It shouldn't really move closer unless there is aggressive driving but inside to frame will get closer as soon as the axle articulates.

I have a set of the Z28 style 17" Year one rims that I had on my '80 Malibu. This is the staggered set, with 2 17" by 8" rims with 4 1/2" BS for the front, and 2 17" by 9" rims with 5" BS for the rear. I have Nitto Invos on all 4, 245/45 for the front, and 255/50 for the rear. I tried them on my '84 Monte SS last week, with 7/32" spacers on the rear rims. So far at least, they are working fine, but the inner sidewall of the rear tires is close to the frame rails on the rear.
