To carb spacer or not to carb spacer that is the question

Re: To carb spacer or not to carb spacer that is the questio

anytime you can insulate the carb from heat do it. I have a 1 inch plastic open spacer on my 350 olds and I will be getting a 2 inch phenolic carb spacer to stack underneath the 1 inch, works like a charm for my motor. I use open spacers because my motors powerband is more higher rpm related (like for quarter mile blasts). 4 hole spacers are typically used for street motors and is supposed to give more throttle reponse and low end torque unlike an open spacer. Tapered/stepped 4 hole spacers increase velocity and gain more horsepower using them. Depending on what your needs are you can pick what material spacer like aluminum, plastic, phenolic and wood. I would use a plastic/phenolic spacer no matter what application because they keep the carburetor cooler and prevent vapor lock. Hope this helps.

A carb spacer is not a magic horsepower adder. Some builds respond well to them and some can actually lose power. The only way to know if it will work for you is to install one and see for yourself.

Plus, the "butt dyno" is not going to tell you if you really gained numbers or not  The proper way to tell if it is an improvement is to have it on a dyno and play with a couple of different spacers

Re: To carb spacer or not to carb spacer that is the questio

basiclly spacers add plenum volume. like was stated before. some help, some hurt. depends on how much air your pushing around, CI, and rpm.

generally a spacer is needed in the upper rpm range.

Re: To carb spacer or not to carb spacer that is the questio

A spacer will also crutch a carb that is too small for the application with the addition of said plenum volume.

Vapor lock, there's a term I had not heard or read in quite a while...!

I think the question is to clear the hood or not to clear the hood, only to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous hood-less-ness, ah, there is the rub! The spacer to requit thou needeth a hood scoop, no, per chance a cowl hood! For who would bear the whips and scorns of, say, a nitrous plate instead! Then you will have new sins to be remembered!

Sorry, you started it! :blam:

That's a good point about hood clearance. With an adapter plate on a stock intake manifold and a slightly taller air filter, I am officially out of room under the hood.

that was hilarious haha I was so confused at first haha. But I'm running a 4" Cowl n no air cleaner. Strictly track

Re: To carb spacer or not to carb spacer that is the questio

IIRC the spacer can slightly change the RPM point of the HP/torque peaks - you're not really adding HP per se, just changing where you're going to get it.

The carb on my LS1 sits way too high so any spacer is out-of-the-question.
