I'm torn between two cutlass'. I can't decide whether I want to buy a new one or one in pretty good condition or to keep upgrading and improving the one I have that has been in my family since it was new. I have an 1987 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham that my grandmother bought and she had it for about 7 years and then gave it to my mother and now I have it. I put a V8 in it and now I need to upgrade the trans because the 200c doesn't have much life left. I would also like to build up the rearend a little. I'm not trying to make it a super fast car but I would like it to be a good street car. I probably have to put another 5k into the car.
Then on the other hand I guess I have the option of buying a new/used cutlass that could already have everything I want for probably 2.5-4k. Can't make up my mind! Financially its an easy decision but love for a car that has been in the family for 23 years makes it tough!

it's the devil you know ( your car ) vs the devil you don't ( the other ). Odds are the other car you are looking at needs work too. At least with your car you can judge how much more work your car will need against what has already been replaced.

#1 thing to go on these cars is the body. Paint gets worn out and the body / frame gets rusty and that's where big money is spent in restoration.

why not buy the other cutlass and switch out what you want from that car and install your parts into it then sell it after...

What shape is the body and frame in on the family car? When building a car I think the base of the car the body and frame are the most important for good build foundation. If you can get a rare car like the 442 in good shape it might be cheeper to go that way. Good luck with your car.

Stick with the proven family car, instead of buying someone else's problem!
