I have a Chevy 305 with th350 trans in my '86 Regal. Somehow I forgot to hook up the detent cable for the trans and realized it was just sitting on the trans during cleaning of the undercarriage. I have an aftermarket bracket installed and the cable is still a few inches short even with the bracket adjusted all the way forward. The factory bracket that was on the engine makes the difference even bigger as the detent cable attaches a couple inches even farther back. The cable was on the trans when I bought it and has never been hooked up with this particular engine as far as I know. I believe I just need a longer cable but not sure on exactly how long or if I should just get a universal length one. I put around 700 Miles on the car already with about half of that being highway miles so I defiantly want to get this last thing put together. Any input?

Here's the bracket i have.

Here shows the detent cable as far forward as it will go and its still short. The top part of where it clips onto the bracket is also limiting it from going just a little more forward.

Planning on doing around 120 miles on the highway next weekend. Hoping for some input.

i had the same problem with my bracket as well. this is what i did undo the screws that make it adjustable and flip that b*tch around then but back on the screws... now that its facing forward you should be good..

It will solve the problem and create another one....because the adjustment tab will be covered...ask me how I know....I'll bet 90% of those brackets sold end up in the garbage can. I suggest using a universal detent cable that can be adjusted to adapt to extra length requirements. I think summit or jegs sells them.

Thanks guys. Looks like i'll be ordering a universal one from summit and figuring out a way to rig it together for this weekend like the little plate i made for the throttle cable that it looks like i dont need anymore with the new bracket.

Yet another powdercoated factory part just sitting on the parts shelf. Old one on top, new one on bottom.
