Hey all, I need some help with a transmission.

I have a 1983 Elcamino with a 357 (.040 over 350) backed by the original th200 3 speed.

After the stock rear end decided to break a c-clip and throw the drive axle for a second time, i decided to swap in a posi.

The posi that i picked up to swap in has 4.10 gears. I know the th200 wont stand up to 4.10 gears.

I recently purchased a th400 to replace the th200, but am being told that a th400 would not be ideal and I should get a different trans.

I was thinking of getting a 700r4 to replace the th200 and sell the 400, however i am finding that it may be a good bit of work to fit the 700r4, with shortening the driveshaft, different cross member etc...

I was also thinking of getting a 200-4r, which would be more of a bolt in swap, but have been told the 357 would tear it up in a hurry.

So, what should l do? Which transmission should I stuff between the 357 and 4.10 gears?

Any help is greatly appreciated, as I would like to get my Elky drivable before summer flies by. :?

The only reason I can think that a TH400 would not be "ideal" is if you do a lot of highway driving.

how much hp do you think your pushing?

I dont do very much highway driving, especially with the Elcamino. If I do drive on the highway it is either my dad's Lumina or my Dodge Ram that I drive.

I think the Elcamino has seen the highway twice in the last year. Once when I brought it down to Ohio from Michigan, and the other when my dad drove it to my uncles house when it threw the axle.

when i looked up the suffix code, it said it was originally from a 1970 Caprice or pickup, and had 290 hp.

based on that number and that it has been bored .040 over, i would estimate 300 hp, maybe a little higher.

i dont think tearing up a th200-4r trans would be a problem.

would a 200-4r from an 89 Caprice work?

what would i need to do to make a 200-4r fit?

The 200-4R is a good choice, with the advantage of having overdrive. But if you rarely drive it on the highway, then overdrive isn't really needed. The TH400 is one of the toughest automatics GM ever built, and is the top choice for racers making serious power.
