Transmission help

well I found a 200-4r transmission near me for $75 that i will probably pick up if it will work, its from an 89 Caprice.

That way I will have it if I dont like the th400 in there. If I decide the th400 is fine as it is, then I would have a 305/200-4r combo for another project.

What all do i need to put in the th400?

I was told I need a larger out put yoke, would that entail having the drive shaft welded?

I also need to source a torque converter, the one thing I forgot to ask the guy about. :blam:

A couple thoughts.

"The posi that i picked up to swap in has 4.10 gears. I know the th200 wont stand up to 4.10 gears."

The opposite is true, more gear put less load on the trans.More gear will also lower your stall for the same reason.

A solid Metric 200 will survive behind the HP you are making. The solid comment being the key.

Next would be a th350, less weight and it eats up less power then the th400. At your level a th400 is overkill, but you will never kill it.

No need for a 700r at your hp.

The driveshaft will be different length depending on which trans you go with. The yoke can be corrected at that time.

Also Napa makes conversion joints.

More info about the combination would be needed to suggest a convertor.

If it was mine, I would :

1) service the trans ( filter, 2 bottles of Lucas, rest type f)

2) install a matched convertor

3) install a trans cooler

4) fix the rear

5) enjoy the car while planning for the future.

If and I don't think it will, the trans does let go , what have you lost?

I would look into putting the 200-4R in there. You will have to probably have some upgrades done to it though.
No need to shorten the driveshaft. The 200-4R is the same length as the metric 200. th 350 and th 400. You will need a different crossmember.

Just curious, could you tell me the code on the little blue tag.

I also have an '89 Caprice 200-4R . It's all apart. I believe mine is a CTF code. I'll have to go check.

You're right man...close in length, but no cigar...

Well, the tag I found is not blue, it is plain silver, here are the numbers on the tag:

552

79-CO (could be a 0 possibly)

43653
