transmission not going in gear, PLEASE HELP

1983 cutlass Calais w/floor sh*t. Transmission wont engage. I replaced a broke shift cable and changed the transmission fluid and filter and transmission won't go in gear but the shifter is shifting the lever on the trans thru all the gears.

Wasn't enough transmission fluid in it, I just bought it a few days ago and the guy before me took alot of stuff apart and didn't know what he was doing. And will do.

Yeah, same thing happened to me with my TH350 in my regal. Damn thing took 6 quarts and is still a little low but it works beautifully now. Would only go in reverse and it slipped like a b*tch. Only made it about a block before I realized I probably should've checked the fluid before leaving.
