I think some full size cars came with the Buick 4.1 with a four barrel carb & dual plane intake. You might salvage yard source one of them for cheap. Little better gas mileage and power.

i have a aluminum 4 barrel intake for a 4.1 available if interested

also the problem isnt your trans, its certainly your rear end gear ratio

There you go buys Peter's intake for a lot less coin then a new one. I bet the single plane on a stock 231 really sucks. Hey but if he just does the gears without eventually doing the overdrive trans it will be quicker but suck to drive anywhere. Suck fuel and rev hard on a motor that doesn't particularly like to rev. Plus the rear and trans can be carried over for the next powerplant. A cheap used aluminum four barrel dual plane intake should be worthwhile but for the cost and results of a new intake meh not me.
