Book says to use a vice-grips and long handled screwdriver. Prop trunk lid open so as not to fall on your head. Grab the shaft with the vice-grips and use the screwdriver to pry the adjustment end out of the grooves to readjust tension or remove.

so nothing exotic just good ole man handling huh? Have you ever tried it? I guess the book says to use a long handled tool so you dont pinch your digits

Funny thing is older manuals say to use the special long handled tool with great leverage, yet the 83' book I have says screwdriver- go figure. I've done it- be carefull- lots of stored energy in those rods. My Firebirds had the rod welded to the body- not good. At least these are removable.
