trunk lock

Are you serious or is that sticker a gag? Anyway, mine most certainly does not have such a sticker. If it did I think I'd write GM to complain about him.
The story was a joke but the sticker is real and probably 30 years ago you could read the initials on it.

so shove the trunk lid over till its centered. and remember to adjust your latch. ya'know, its posible that the latch was correct all along and it was the shifted trunk lid that caused all the problems

You can't just shove it over, because it isn't shifted, it's properly installed on the hinge. The assembly has a fixed alignment side-to-side, by design. You can only adjust height and fore-aft. It looks like it will require bending the hinge arms, one way or another, to move the lid sideways. And it won't be easy to do that while still keeping the lid square.

Unless there's something I'm missing about the hinge. Wouldn't be the first time. But the GM manual says side-to-side isn't adjustable.

The latch was definitely not correct. Un-rotating the latch has made the lock much easier to operate. I expect this cylinder to last a little longer, at least.

Thanks for the bump stops, too, that does seem to un-twist the lid to a satisfactory degree.

trust me, it will move. your talking 1/8 inch movement. open the lid and give it a shove. there's enough weakness in the hinges to allow some movement in the lid. gm's assembly precision was not that good back then, how do you think it was done at the factory or dealership? if you don't trust me, go to the junk yard and try it there. or try it on a friends car the you don't like.

😀 I like to think this car is my friend, but I'm not always sure I like him.

I know I'll try something. My main concern is keeping the lid square on all four sides. Then again, there is some fore-aft adjustment, so you might compensate by moving one side fore or aft more than the other. But even so, there might be other reasons I'd be sorry I succeeded in making the thing move. I haven't looked at the hinge mechanism very closely.
