Cubic feet wouldnt tell you that, because height is an issue with the downsloping trunk lid, not to mention excess capacity takenup by the spare tire, whether you have a spacesaver or full sized spare, wasted space on the package tray up near the back seat, and even volume under the overhangs against the quarter panel. Likewise, the argument about leaving the trunk open has an issue with the tapering slope of the opened lid and the tailpanel the lights mount to. going to just have to open it up and measure.
For what it is worth, I fit a 38" x30" x16" gas tank box in the trunk of a regal which has the same trunk floor but different sheetmetal/decklid and that was with the original space saver spare still in place...
