Hello,
i own 1980 Buick Regal 3.8 Turbo. Performance wise there is everything stock.
Im trying to fix driving stability by lowering and fixing axles, but I thought I should spend some money on engine too. Since there is everything stock - please advice me whats the best begining of slight improving performance? Im not planning to do some heavy mods, just to give the engine some care. I thought maybe start with new carburetor...but which?? Please advice me anything!

Please note that I live in The Czech Republic and its hard to get all the "small" parts over + get them installed right because not really many people can handle these over here. So I rather focus on changing stuff like carb.

Thanks

Rare set up. You likely receive better input from other 3.8 carb turbo owners on turbobuick.com but this link has some good maintenance and mod tips to get you started. http://www.beforeblack.net/racing.htm

BEFORE DOING ANY MODS (aka "Spring Cleaning"):

  1. Install boost pressure gauge!!!!! (cannot stress this enough)
  2. Use highest octane gas possible.
  3. Install new, NGK UR5 plugs gapped at 0.035. (the recommended AC Delco plug is too hot and too wide!!)
  4. Confirm ESC system is working.
  5. Confirm Quadrajet's secondaries are opening properly
  6. Replace Quadrajet's internal filter with a 3/8" external fuel filter.
  7. Make sure downpipe isn't resting against header. (I use a turnbuckle at the converter to pull it towards the frame rail.)
  8. Learn to power launch (build boost against foot brake until about 0 psi.)
  9. MAKE SURE THE CAR IS RUNNING RIGHT BEFORE MAKING MODS!
MODS TO BEGIN WITH (basically what I've done and recommend). This should get you into the 15's.

  1. If it's an ECM car, get a cheap scan tool (check ebay for OTC Monitors) or Casper's 10-LED Knock Gauge to monitor knock
  2. Adjustable wastegate actuator for increasing boost (watch for detonation!) www.gnttype.org Adjustable Wastegate
  3. 165°F thermostat.
  4. K&N cone filter (either replace stock air box or use 3" dryer duct)
  5. Open up exhaust (gut cat, bigger pipes, dual exhaust, dump pipe, etc.).
  6. Box lower control arms and add an air lift spring for better traction and no wheel hop.
  7. Modify/Tune Quadrajet on non-ECM cars. Tune secondaries on ECM carbs.
  8. Tune advance HEI distributor on non-ECM cars.
