It appears that there are too many inexpensive imports readily available. The Australian government decided a while back to stop subsidizing and protecting native car manufacturing - even if it was all foreign owned anyway. I'd be interested in what the future holds for heavy industry in Australia. I know there was a place called the Castlemain Rod Shop that made adapter plates to mount almost any oddball engine to any oddball transmission in the past 80 years. People must be driving SOMETHING interesting down there.

my daughter's bf said the sales of the domestic made cars have been dwindling and the imports have increased so that's why the demise of industry is on it's way. He said that the cars they have are pretty awesome and their version of the el camino is very popular and alot people are driving them so it's nothing special to see one. You really have to watch your speed there, alot harsher with much higher fines than here. I was cruising at 122 kilometers in a 100 kph zone last night. That's about 75 mph in a 60 mph zone. Here they would drop that to 15 kilometers over which is no points and a $48.50 fine. Over there he said that'd be 3 points and about a $350 fine

In New Mexico, you can drive 400 miles north-south in state. So, we're grateful that the speed limit is 75 mph on the interstate highways. 85 will generally be ignored unless there is a whole raft of State Troopers gathered, ready to batch the revenue. Haven't been bagged in 18 years, so I can't tell you what the fines would be these days. But we have ZERO inspections. You can drive around with bald tires and a spiderweb windshield for years. I think the Canadian government would have a heart attack at what some people drive north of Santa Fe...
