What is the canister thing that sits opposite of the car battery in a g-body?I believe it has a few lines coming from it.

Thats the charcoal canister, part of the emission system. If the emissions have been removed, then you should be able to get rid of it. Just make sure you cap the line that goes from your gas tank to the canister.

Sorry. This isn't a pic from my car but I have 1 in my Cutlass and a 2nd one wouldn't be hard at all to come across. If you like those I'm sure I could find another one with no problem. They shouldn't even cost anything but a couple of bucks.

I'm just curious cause I found a pair of the ones that run from the fenders to the core support, but the guy wanted 40$. I'm going to the junkyard this thanksgiving break to look for bracing. I always go to the pick n pull down here and look in the chevy section at malibus, montes, and caminos, but it never struck me to go and look in the BOP sections. Stupid me 😳. And thats one thing I noticed, the BOP's got all the good frame bracing and sway bars but the chevy g-bodies hardly got any of that unless you had an ss.

Wanted to ask, where did you get those firewall to fender braces?
Those are commonly referred to as "Monte Carlo bars". I picked some up for my car (off a Monte) but they interfere with the core support-to-fender braces that are already on it. They would probably fit if they were bent.

Frank: That is the charcoal canister and it is basically an "air filter" for your emissions system. It pulls the gas vapors out of the air that is vented from your fuel tank. The valve on top allows the engine vacuum to pull the vapors through when the car is running. It has no negative performance effects. If you remove it be sure not to plug the tank vent or you'll run into other issues.

What would be the cause of gas to pour out of one of those canisters? thats what happened to me at work one day and with a couple of bolts and an earplug I had the vacuum lines all disconnected and plugged and had a 2nd battery in there within the month.
