Mine looks like it is held in by a 10mm bolt on the side closest to the engine and accessed from the top. The top of my canister is labeled. A couple hoses go to vacuum sources, one to the carb vent, one to the tank vent. If you are going to remove it, you can pull the hoses and plug them at the carb. The tank vent can leak fuel if you have a really full tank and park in the sun on a hot day. You can also expect to smell gas when you park, especially if you park it in a garage.
Fuel leakage from the canister can be caused by the same thing or a stuck needle/seat or sunk float in the carb, but only if the valve on top fails.

They fit. One bar goes under and the other goes over.
