Re: Used engine... What should I do to it before I drop it i

I finally pulled the front rod bearing today. It looks okay to me. The bearing that goes on the cap side looks a little more worn than the bearing on the other side but there is no grooves. It has .020 stamped on the backside so I guess that means it's oversized? I slid my fingernail across it & it's prettty smooth. The crank is smooth as a babys bottom too lol. I haven't pulled the front main cap yet.

Which oil should I use in this engine regular or the synthetic & whats a good filter to use? Someone said there were 2 types of one piece rubber gaskets. Which one do i need for this 80-85 2 pc. rear main block?

bottom end looks clean, good rebuild. Top of heads look good. Since you're going through all this trouble it'd be a good idea to take the heads off and check the valvetrain and cylinders, quality fel pro gaskets will give you more life plus you can play with compression a bit. Also will tell u if theres any valve problems or bent pushrods. Rent a micrometer from the auto store if u don't have one and see if yours is a 355, the oversized bearings makes me wonder if its also been bored a bit

Just pick up a two piece rear main seal at the auto store.
for oil 10w30 regular. I use penzoil

edit - another suggestion is to make sure everything is torqued to spec, since you already have it apart
