Well, I am finally getting to fixing my top. I ripped off most of the top about 2 months ago. Got lazy, work, school, didn't have much time. Now I got time, drilled out the rivets, got the trim off. Pulled out the DA sander, come to find out I need a bigger compressor. lol but here are some pics of my top. Going to take some work to get it good again. I plan on going hard top, I don't want to ever deal with this crap again. But I loved the look of the vinyl top though....decisions decisions decisions...

I'm in the same boat as you; I love how the vinyl top looks, but I'd rather not have my roof melt into dust under it. What I've been considering is maybe faking the top with something like Plastidip or truck bed coating, though I might just go with coating the roof under the top with an assload of POR-15.

Oh, POR-15, eh?? Never heard of it and it looks like something that can solve a lot of headaches now and then. I just sanded and primed the rust spots for now. Gonna fill in the holes and do some body filler to smooth out the spots. And looks like I will be coating mine with POR 15 too. lol thanks for mentioning it man!!

Removing a vinyl top is opening a can of worms. I took mine off (more like it turned to dust when I touched it), and it looked similar to yours underneath. You have to grind the metal really clean before you do any sort of patchwork or filler work.

I was in the same boat about 2 years age. My cutty had a white quarter top which was all cracked up so i starting thinking about how much rust might be under it but to my suprise there was ni rust at all the factory chocolate brown paint. Just remember wit going hard top you will need new side windows the rubber seal but i just bout some of the black 3m window glue. I taped up the windiw and about a quarter of an inch past the gap on the body then filled the gap all the way around. Then once it begain to stiffin take a plastic bag wrap around your finger and smooth it out the remove your masking tape and you have a perfect rubber seal w/o buy new side windows. And you will need new rear window trim anf new rear deck trim below window cause you old on has studs for the molding clips
