Wagon tailgate adjustment help

I have an extra latch floating around. I'll try it out on that. I'll sand and scuff it up good, spray it with some etching primer. and give it a few coats.

Any new progress to report?

The rubber bumpers are there, the weather stripping is in great shape. I tried the tape but no luck. It looks like the strikers in the jam itself need to be moved in unless something is wore out? With the window up, I can close the hatch fine.....everything lines up perfect except I can pull it back that 3/8" in or so.

I have the same squeaking noise, but when I replaced my rear window shocks the squeaking quieted down but didn't stop. Maybe that has something to do with it?

All my wagons had that annoying squeak. Never got around to fixing it, I just turned the radio up. 😀

It's an inherent problem, or malady with our wagons. I think I always remembered mine squeaking from day one.
As Jim said, turn the radio up. These cars were cheap mass produced vehicles. As the old adage goes, you can't turn a pig's ear into a silk purse. even though some of us try..
I could understand being pissed if it was a high end BMW or Mercedes wagon...but it's a Chebby for heaven's sake.

About 20 years ago I did the welding trick on the latch loop, and that solved the problem back then for me. My current wagon is nice and quiet pending a heart and lung transplant. Parked in a barn with a dust cover over it.

The hinge screws on the glass have only about four threads on them into the potmetal hinges. The supports push down on the glass when it's closed, which will then in turn help wear the lacth loop. Check the alignment on the hinge screws then put some loctite on the threads. That also helped back in the day. I scored a spare rear hatch during the Cash for Clunkers era. My current window frame popped the welds in the chrome surround and is rubbing a tragic hole in the paint on one side. Gotta get the tailgate open first...

5door79's wagon is in sweet condition!
