Was running rich, now it's running way lean...

Alright, just got the car out of storage, and it was running rich. always was a little on the rich side, not too much, but it was WAY rich. So, I figured before I adjusted the carb and got it running half-decent, I'd do some basic tune-up maintenance. Well, after I changed out the old fuel filter (305, up in my carb, measly little thing), the car is running way lean. It sounds like it's a tractor, and if I move the throttle at all, it threatens to stall. I can be fairly dense sometimes, and I can't figure it out!! Which end (closed end, or end with the hole) should be pointing towards the fuel flow? Seems the end with the hole to let fuel into the filter should be pointing towards the fuel, but I'm lost. Suggestions?
 
i would try flipping the filter around and see what happens. do you have the feedback carb? the O2 sensor may have gotten soaked and is now reading full rich causing the carb to lean out.
 
the open end that is on the fuel inlet side and the closed end is has the spring to keep the filter in place...
 
Update: no update. The thing's still barely able to idle. There's no crimp in the fuel line, I've replaced the filter with a new one just in case it was simply a bad filter, and it doesn't seem to be a vacuum leak, which would be a hard thing for me to cause by changing the filter in any case. If anyone's got any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them.
 
you did say you did some basic tune up maintenance. I'm not sure what you did but I'd look there since just changing the filter isn't going to cause the vehicle to run lean....and how do you know it's running lean?
 
Is it a computer carb? If so maybe the MC solenoid is stuck in the closed position.
 
yea if its a feed back carb ,unplug the MC solidoid and see how it runs.
 
Pontiacgp: Yeah, I was goin' to do the basic stuff, change the fluids, new plugs and wires, you know the deal. I got as far as changing the oil. Next thing I did was the filter, and it hasn't budged since. It won't even start, now, since this morning. If I pump the pedal about 14 times, it'll start, run for 2 seconds, and stall. I had planned on running over it with a water bottle to see if I could spot a vacuum leak, but that's no good if it's not even gonna run for me.

85Cutlass/Jim: Yes, it is a shitty feedback carb. The trouble started immediately after I changed the filter, so all signs point to it, but I'm stumped. Now, all I need is a pointer towards where this "MC solenoid" is, and I'll unplug it and see how it runs. What should I be looking for when I do?

I'll profess guys, I've always stayed about 30 feet away from carbs/carb problems. If it was out of tune, I'd have someone else tune it. I'm a total noob at the carb stuff.
 
the m/c soleniod connector is on the top of the carb, front side. it should be a blue or black 90* connector. you can also try unplugging the vertical (white?) connector to the d/s of the m/c, this is the TPS.
remember to hold the throttle at WOT when cranking because the plugs will be flooded by now.

Out of all the things I have read this sticks out and please someone explain the checking for a vacuum leak with a waterbottle? wtf?
