I've never seen one with my own eyes, but my buddy claims he has, and there are photos of it somewhere, but a Cutlass diesel with a manual transmission. Now THAT'S a unicorn!

1978 olds cutlass, 260 V8, with a factory T-5 manual transmission. Kinda wished I would have kept that car for the uniqueness of it, but research showed the trans was to weak to justify doing anything with it. Didn't care for the single headlights anyway.

When you say 260, I'm assuming you mean the 4.3 diesel? Wow. Super-rare! (See "unicorn" in my last post!) :)

the olds 260 gas engine was produced from '76 to '82. and yes you could get a 5spd behind them, i have a '78 and a '79.

the olds 260 diesel was a one hit wonder, only produced in '79. a friend had one back in the '80s, went through 3 crank shafts, broken.
and yes a 5spd was available. i don't know the production figures, but ultra unicorn.

Probably ultra rare because it'd be like driving a tractor.

The 4.3 diesel V8 made the regular 4.3 gas V8 look like a powerhouse, it was rated at 85 hp. When they blew up they quite often put in a new 350 DX, there was another of these Unicorns for sale with a 5 spd and that what was done, a 350 DX warranty fix. Imagine the mileage, probably close to 40 mpg with the 4.3 diesel 5 spd. Of course another 40 would be years to hit 60 mph. I don't know why the T-50 wasn't offered with the 350 diesel, it had the same 205 ft/ lbs as the 260. The 4.3 diesel came back as a V6 with a extra head bolt per cylinder and a serpentine belt set up.

i remember riding with my dad when he test drove a new 79 cutlass with the 4.3l diesel v8, he passed on it. i would love to drive the 4.3l v6 diesel. i know a guy with one in an 83 malibu, but he let it sit too long and is now locked up.
the v6 diesel was never offered with a manual trans, so no flywheel was made for it. bummer. but they were rated at 28mpg hwy with a 3 speed auto.
