What does this interior piece do? Monte Carlo

Just wondering what the purpose of this piece is? It wiggles a little bit, looks like a cover for something. Thanks for you input!

Cars with no AC had a block off cover, that looks like the 86 and newer bezel can't say I've seen what style of block off cover they used. The earlier ones had this style

Interesting! This is an 87 without ac, so this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the replies everyone!

It's the block off that the factory used when a car was ordered or built without A/C. If you pop it out, very, very gently, you should find nothing behind it except the tunnel in the dash substructure where the cold air feed tube would have been located.

If it is wiggly or rattles, a plain old rubber band can be wrapped around it a time or two to take up the slack.
