Hey I know this sounds crazy to some of you but I have a motor and trans comin from a guy and I need to make sure that it is what they say it is. Its supposed to be a Olds 350. My question is how to make sure its a olds 350. Any telltale signs or do I have to look up numbers. The guy tells me its a 74 or 75. I just want to make sure im not buyin a 305 or gettin back my old 307. Any advice would be appreciated. :?:

a 350 should say 5.7 right on the block, toward the back, kinda near the top

Uh, it'd probably have a big '350' cast in the block in raised #'s on on side on the -bottom- underneath the exhaust manifolds. Driver's side I think, not 100% sure on that.

Yeah im not too bright on these things..... That simple huh.

i dont think they are printed on them at all, look at the casting number. i think only the new like 86 and newer blocks have 5.7 or 350 or what ever it may be stamped. back in the day when i swapped my first sbc into my regal i bought a "350" later found out it was a pos 305 after i looked at the casting numbers. long story short i had the motor out the next week and swapped a real "350" into it

A olds motor has the oil tube in front. A 307 will have 5.0 stamped near the block #'s This should help.

Your gonna have to get the number between the timing plate and the intake right there next to the oil fill tube. Also a 73-76 350 olds came with number 8 heads these however could have been changed. To find this number you will wanna look at the number one cylinder and right on the head will be a number or number and letter together stamped there. If it has a 5A,6A,OR7A in capital letters its a 307. if it has a number and letter with the letter stamped diagonally to the bottom right then it is a 350 head. Check out www.442.com for more info. Goodluck

Hey thanx to all who replied this forum is sweet! Well I got the motor and the # between the timing cover and intake is 395558. So I do belive thats the 350. Its painted blue but it dosent look factory.

The heads have 8 stamped on them. Really like to get 350 to 400hp but I dont know. I dont know if the stock pistons and rods will take that but that would be sweet. I figured I would change the heads and intake when money arrives(meaning when the wife lets me). This motor supposedly runs great and from what I checked it turns over well and the rotor button moves. The kicker is I got the motor with transmission and the guy told me it was a turbo 350 but it sure looks like a 200r4. I have a beat 700r4 with no reverse I was gonna get done but I think I might try the 200r4. Anyone have any opinions on these 2 trannies
