Building a 350. Bored to a 355. 9.77:1 flat top pistons with 062 vortec heads. 1.5 ratio roller tip rockers. Stock rods and crank. Weiand stealth inake. Summit 1103 cam. Holley 600cfm carb. 700r4 trans and 3.42 gears in a 79 olds cutlass salon. We're hoping for a snotty street motor. Anyone have any opinions?? Thanks
The key to vortec heads is measuring & calculating & confirming before you put that engine together
1). I am thinking think you are a little shy on your compression ratio with flat top pistons (Ie what is your piston to deck clearance, what size valve relief on your flat tops & what thickness head gasket will you be using) competition components has a great free on-line compression calculator provided you have all of these measurements
http://www.buyracingparts.com/compression-ratio-calculator.html I know there are others out there also but summits will not load on my computer
P.S play with this program by changing gasket thickness etc to get your compression where you want
2) Do not rely on springs alone to increase lift when you can measure & confirm. Stock vortecs can handle up to .460 lift however when I stripped mine down & measured retainer to guide clearance with caliper I had 3 different measurements across the two heads. I bought the comp cutting tool made a jig took the guides down 3/16" (+/-) & measured,.610 good to .550 lift lots of room for valve seal clearance & that cam. Note used the comp springs that came with the XE-268 kit & they fit without having to machine the seat
3) Port only exhaust side as intakes are already big enough & I believe they induce turbulence
good luck on a "pump friendly" snotty street motor
