I am planning on making my trunk look nice in my G body, and don't know what material to use as my backer board. I plan on making a panel to cover the spare tire like the optional ones used on some G bodies and a panel to close off the other side of the trunk. Then, I will be making a panel to close off the ends of the speaker box to the wheelhouses. I plan on a charcoal gray carpet to cover it all. What material should I build the panels from? Would 1/4 in plywood be too heavy? Is there a panel board material that is easy to find? I plan to attach the panels to the car by welding brackets to the underside of the trunk's weatherstripping edge to mount them securely, and want to try and get it done this week. I am finishing up my metal work this week and want to do this before I paint the car.

what about some 1/4" or 1/2" MDF. you now the stuff they make speaker boxes out of. just a thought. you should be able to get some at Lowes or Home Depot, if not there try a car stereo shop they should be able to hook you up.

Yeah, I was thinking about MDF, but It doesn't take screws too well towards the edges and tends to crumble. If I could find some sort of plastic I think that would be the best.

Aluminum.

It would add resonance to the subs in the trunk. It needs to be sonically dead because the car is getting a 1,000 watt stereo system. It's a little small, but it is meant for sound quality and not loudness.

So did all those pics in my trunk post get you motivated?

Thats my dilema too as to which board to use. I dont want to use plywood it would be over 100lbs back there. I was thinking of using masonite or the masonite peg board thinking that would be lightweight.

Plexi might work too but it would be more costly.. post up pics of the progress!

WOW....I used to work at a plastic recycling factory and they would get tons of large 1/4" plastic panels, all different colors and everything. Should have grabbed some, because I thought about that when I was there.

Well, my motivation is actually a friend's 87 Mustang Convertible that I helped build. We found it as a 4 cyl car in a back lot of a used car dealer with a ripped top, full of leaves and sinking into the ground. (Ironically, it was across the street from the used car lot I got my Cutlass from 14 years ago.) We both have kind of gone a similar direction with our cars being nice but quick drivers with all of the luxuries. After all, anyone can go quick in a gutted car with nothing but an engine a seat, steering wheel and pedals as the chief priority. I want a high 12 second car with A/C, cruise, etc that is good on gas and can be used to commute in Tampa Bay traffic. I have always thought the G body trunk was a little too austere from the factory.

As for progress, none as of yet. I am de-rusting the underside of the roof right now to ready it for zinc primer and Rustoleum. It is getting covered with Dynamat ( or a cheaper generic equivalent) and I need it to have a solid base to stick to. Hopefully, I will get to the fabrication part later on this week. I also need to strengthen the floors with additional metal as it is rusty under the braces where I can't get to. I don't want any water to get in under the carpet once the car is together so I am having to do a lot of work. I have all new weatherstripping and have replaced all of the windows so the glue/urethane is fresh and leak free. Making a nice car sure takes a lot more work than just making it fast! I want it to last though, as I am not having fun doing the body right now. I am probably putting 20-35 hours a week into the car in addition to working 30-40 hours and going to college half time.

Well now you started this tread, we expect to see an outcome, and no excuses either --- stay on task!

Believe me, I post plenty of pics as I go, but it may be next week before I finally get to doing it as I want to finish roughing in the floors and my All-Metal work first.
