can anyone tell me what style wiper motor this is. In a friends 83 malibu wagon

It looks like the early style with the crappy type washer pump....also looks like the plastic cover is missing from it.

is there a better version? is it plug and play?

I am using a later style wiper motor and pump. However, it was not a plug and play install. I had to cut the pigtail/ plugs out of a later G-body car. I'm also using a later year tilt column with the stalk mounted wiper switch which is compatible with this type of wiper motor.
Mounting the late style motor entailed drilling one new hole to line up the new motor. Only two of them line up.

Using the old style wiper motor, I would suggest installing a universal washer pump with a momentary switch or button.
