WHATS THE BEST CARB UPGRADE?

the car is factory. ive had several GMs in my day. every carbed v8 ive had has been a quadrajet. if it came from the factory and worked fine i dont see why theres a problem. plus like everyone says, it is a well rounded carb. decent gas mileage. decent response off the line. and we all know that rustangs hate us on the highways. ive had no complaints about the 740. im just ignorant to the fuel system. i have ALOT to learn when it comes to things of this nature. im on my 3rd G-body and i wouldnt buy another G-body if it didnt have a quadrajet. so to your response, they are factory spec. and are supposed to be on the car. think about the 442...4bbl, 4spd, dual pipes....

very expressive in thought are we? haha its all good.
Ever drive a car with a Q-jet sitting ontop of a hot 350 SBC? I have 😛 Anyone who has would understand lol.

A Qjet is a vacuume secondary carb so the secondaries only open up to what they need to. If your engine runs 500 CFM it runs CFM, if you stick headers and intake and it starts flowing 550 CFM it opens up to 550 CFM.

Same goes for vacuume secondary hollys. As long as it isnt a mechanical seconary you cant overcarb a motor.

my 83 mc (RIP) had a tree fitty and and quadrajet in it. i know the orgasmic feeling...

gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Those sheets that come with the carb kit are so-so, just pretty much copies of the factory manual. The float level is different for every carb and the number on the side is what you go by. Also when setting the float level be sure to hold it upside down while keeping your finger on the float keeper pin. (the power valve spring will fall out if you forgot to remove it) You measure from the lip of the float to the surface of the float bowl body. A good one-size-fits-all setting is 1/4" if you can't find your specs, but most emissions carbs use a larger number (thus lower fuel level). By all means get both Roe and Ruggles' books, both are indispensible.

golden info guys. thanks. glad i joined this forum.
