those avanti things they made back in the 80s were among the ugliest. i remember i got a calender for Christmas that had one of those for the picture in Sept which is my birthday month. i threw that thing in the trash at the end of august because i did not want to look at that piece of s*+t for a month. all the other cars in the calender were awesome and then they throw that in there. I'm willing to take the good with the bad most of the time like when you go the beach and your checking out the babes in bikinis and a big ole gal in a 2 piece comes walking by or one of those fellas wearing a speedo. ya know you just have to live with the mental anguish for a while until the next hottie comes walking by.

Here's the original oddball Citroen---the 2CV. It has a 425-607cc engine with 2 cylinders, a distributorless ignition, and a number of other "unique" features. The original design specs were that it be able to transport two French peasants across a plowed field with a basket of eggs, and not break any. Because of this, the suspension is a work of engineering art. The British built a variant of it called the Hydrolastic system, but it is not quite the same.

My high school economics teacher collects those cars, another odd thing about them is that they dont have hinges everything is crimped together

those old Avanti's are getting to be collector items now. i personally love them plus they are g-bodies underneath the body, the suspension frame and everything else is straight GM g-body

:worthless:

Does this mean I need to add a Studebaker section to the site?! ACK! 😀 😀

the 2CV is a Love Hate thing. Hate the looks but I love the technology it brought forth.

VW Thing has to be in the Top 5 along with the Mustang 2

technically the later 70-80's Avantis built were not Studebakers they wre built by Avanti a private company. google it and see. Now only if i could find one cheap enogh and do the 6-speed/LS1 swp, now that would be fun!

take a look below, copy & paste

Yeah, it's kinda ugly, but I find it hard to hate on Hans Ledwinka's brainchild. Besides, it has an air-cooled, rear-mounted Hemi V8. It was designed in the 1930's before the Nazi annexation of Czechoslovakia, at which time it is alleged that the Germans stole Ledwinka's ideas and put them into the KDF wagen ( KDF stands for Kraft Durch Freude, or Strength Through Joy, hence the Beetle was originally the "Strength Through Joy Car"). VW ( as it was renamed by the British after the war) was later sued by Tatra ( now state owned as Czechoslovakia was now Communist) for theft of Ledwinka's design. It was settled out of court in the latter 60's.

Also, Tatras were usually only used ( not owned, the state owned them) by high party officials. It was sort of an alternative to something like a GAZ Volga or maybe a ZIL. Fidel Castro is reported to be the only person to have had one with factory A/C.

(and yes, I really do know this off the top of my head!)
