The original design specs were that it be able to transport two French peasants across a plowed field with a basket of eggs, and not break any. Because of this, the suspension is a work of engineering art. The British built a variant of it called the Hydrolastic system, but it is not quite the same.

Yeah, it's kinda ugly, but I find it hard to hate on Hans Ledwinka's brainchild. Besides, it has an air-cooled, rear-mounted Hemi V8. It was designed in the 1930's before the Nazi annexation of Czechoslovakia, at which time it is alleged that the Germans stole Ledwinka's ideas and put them into the KDF wagen ( KDF stands for Kraft Durch Freude, or Strength Through Joy, hence the Beetle was originally the "Strength Through Joy Car"). VW ( as it was renamed by the British after the war) was later sued by Tatra ( now state owned as Czechoslovakia was now Communist) for theft of Ledwinka's design. It was settled out of court in the latter 60's.Furtrader said:I think the Tatra is pretty fugly.I saw one in person. They are HUGE cars.
