how long do they have to be?

well if you have stock length studs, they probably are not long enough. you need to make sure that with the spacer and wheel on that the lug nuts have a lot of thread to grab onto, not just one or two threads

I am currently using 1.25" rear and 1.00" front spacers from Titan Wheel Accessories.

They sell on eBay or you can order directly from the shop, but I found that they discounted their eBay offerings, so that's the way I went.

Here is a link to their eBay store: http://stores.ebay.com/titanwheelaccessories

There are MANY companies offering machined spacers like this. You can usually get a set of new, machined billet T6061 aluminum spacers with studs for about $100.

at 1in you absolutely have to have the type that bolts to the axle flange/brake hub, and has it's own studs for the wheel. you also need to make sure the hub of the spacer matches the lip on the car, and the lip on the spacer matches the wheel--this is where the actual load is carried. the studs simply hold the tire to the flange.

jmt455 how much did it cost for your 4 spacers, if you don't mind me asking?

IIRC, each pair was $50, including shipping.
