Whinning noise...HELP

Apparently I have a whinning irritating noise that comes and goes and it sounds like the water pump it's not over heating belts are pretty taut but was wondering vould it really be possible that it is that...any and all help ir highly appreciated...thanks.

Does it whine while driving or just sitting still running or both?

It does do it when idling and at times when I drive but wjen its idling it gets pretty bad and alternator tested and checked out fine...

Could be water pump or alternator. Bearings in those. As suggested use a stethoscope or a long screwdriver. Sometimes you can just put it on those a feel that somethings not right. Been my experience, but I guess not always, when water pump bearing goes out it leaks out of very small hole on bottom of water pump. And belts are adjusted properly as you have stated? Got to be a moving part. Power steering pump? Btw, what kind of motor?

try taking the alt belt off and see if is goes away. provided you have other belts to drive the water pump.

I jave had problems in the past witj alignment in power stsering belt due to not have the correct spacers and what not for the p/s pump...rigged it so it works without squeal of belt..it's the 307 v8...
