So I've been reading around on this and I decided to go ahead and and get the gaskets I need for the head but how can I tell if the head is crack other than an obvious line that's not suppose to be there ? ......

Best and most accurate way is to take them in and have them magnafluxed. If the gasket let loose there should be very visible signs on the gasket, such a hole that looks burned through. Either way I wouldn't put heads back an engine that blew a head gasket without taking them to a shop and having them magnafluxed. It isn't very expensive.

I agree with Chris, plus when I have them at the shop I get them refaced so I know the heads are flat

This isn't just the "best and most accurate way" it is the only way. If you don't have them checked and you put them back on, well .... :blam:

And here I was thinking I can do it all in a day .......machine shop it is :-( as if I wasn't broke already

if you look at the gasket and you can find where it was leaking the heads are probably ok. Did you overheat the engine?

You could do it the old fashioned way. Take a straightedge and check it yourself. Lay it along the gasket surface and see if any light sneaks under it. Was it an overheat or did it just start smoking out of the blue?

If you dont have the funds you can take a chance, if its a 307 and a driver you should be fine with doing so.
I wouldnt if you have some money into it...
White smoke is from coolent so you might want to confirm that the coolent was coming from the passeges on the head and not the intake.
