I found some very lightly used factory 3:42 ring and pinion gears out of an '01 Trans Am. They're from a 7.5 inch like my current rear end but I have 2:56 gears and I have no idea if these 3:42s will fit my carrier. Anyone have any ideas?

They will work but you need to buy a ring gear spacer. Summit sell them for around $50. They ring gears in a 01 should be 7 5/8 either way they work.

Well after buying the spacer I might as well buy new gears instead. I was hoping for 3:73s anyway. As always, thanks for the info.

** on a side note I believe 01' would still be classified as 4th Gen F-body ** not to be confused with the 5th gen camaro's that are out.

I was using wikipedia. They could be wrong.

some refer to the late model 4th gens as 5th gen because of the updated body, engine, and all that. That was, of course, before they brought back the camaro, now we are just confused because the new camaro isnt classified as an F-body.

I have always known the 98-02s as the 5th gen. Not to hijack the thread but does anyone know what gear ratio came in an 83 base model Camaro? Its got the v6 and 5 speed. I cant find it anywhere and figured someone here would know.

Sounds like we need to find some good connections to an F-Body forum.
