I'm looking into ordering a Pypes x-pipe kit and want to know if anyone has any input for which mufflers sound good but aren't too obnoxious (Street, race or violator). I've seen all of the sound clips, searched youtube, etc and it's just better getting a real world opinion. Thanks!

According to the Pypes sound rating:
Street=7.0 loud at idle
Race=6.0 tame idle, loud on hard acceleration
Violator=9.0/10.0, just loud!

If the above is true, the Race version is more my style. Low key until i really get on it.

I am not running Pypes exhaust but a friend of mine is on his cutlass (Pypes kit with Pypes "Race" mufflers) and it sounds great. Granted the motor is built, which is a major factor in how an exhaust system is going to sound and perform. I remember him saying the install was fairly easy. He did end up welding it all together once he achieved the optimal fitment.

A few months ago I did the same research and found pretty much what you posted to be the answer. I went with the Street Pros but have yet to fire the engine. I have 2" primaries longtube Hookers with a 3.5" collector that goes into 3" TRUE duals with cutouts just before the cross member and dumps just before the rear axle. I can post a sound clip when I fire it up. If you want quiet than the Race Pros are the way to go which is weird because you would think the Streets would be quieter given the name.

That's what I was thinking too. I read elsewhere that the x-pipe quiets it down a little as well.

I have the Pypes X-pipe system and I have tried both Steetpro and Racepro mufflers. I don't recall any difference in the loudness between the two but I liked the sound of the Streetpros better than my current Racepros which of course means absolutely nothing because sound is subjective.

Be wary of ordering your exhaust directly from Pypes. They are rude and incompetent.

X pipes also raises the tone, the H pipe lowers the tone and sound, the sound waves cancel each other when they meet

I just ordered the Race Pro from Summit. I like fast, reliable tracking & shipping!

I got the x-pipe kit that dumps behind the wheels. Maybe it's personal preference but I've always felt like tail pipes exiting at the bumper was better suited for Chevy.

I wish I saw your post earlier. I have pypes 2.5" kit with x-pipe and side rear exits. I have hooker aerochamber mufflers. Sounds good but I was highly disappointed with the overall fitment of the pypes kit. I had to go through hell to get the rear exits to come out even and not hit my rear and/or my rear control arm mount braces. Finally got them perfect but had to beat the hell out of the pypes. I have also been trying to set up a different hanger setup because these style hangers seem to transmit a good amount of vibrations. Lastly I bought nice polished stainless slant cut exhaust tips which I have yet to install...I need to put butt clamps on it since they only sell a set that is the same diameter, I would have liked clamp style tips. Also the tips are quite long and to install them I also need to eliminate the rear exit hangers. It seems others have had better luck than I...their customer service isn't too good either.

I've seen some mixed reviews myself. I really wanted to go with Super-turbos but I'm hoping everything will fit as intended by using the mufflers that come with the kit. The main concern I'm having is that I have down pipes that I bought from R.A.R.E. since I have Pontiac Ram AIr manifolds. Worst case scenario is that there's a return policy.

If it matters to you pypes come from China so don't expect much. Another place that tailors to what you want is Torque Tech. I ordered 2.5in pipes back then switched to 3in mufflers and 3in tail pipes, looks nice and the larger size muffler is louder and less restriction in the bends of 3in tail pipes.
