I've got a neighbor that swears I'm lying to him when I tell him I can only guess that mine makes about 400-450 hp. He swears that mine makes in the 600 hp range. I just laugh at him when he says that.

That is funny... When I rolled my 383 stroker Regal out this year to my first cruise, the rumor circulating after people heard it and saw it was I was pushing 750hp.... I laughed also... Told them that it was not, but if that is what they wanted to believe... Enjoy

Well the guy never called me back about coming to see the truck this weekend. I guess he was planning on modding the throttle body and swirl port heads to make it into a wheelstanding pavement melting beast of an extended cab long bed chevy truck.

Funny thing is I could probably change the ad to say rebuilt 350 4 bolt main and it'd probably sell in 2 hours.

Do it... are they gonna pull the engine to verify?

On the big hp TBI thing... I have some pocket ported 193s that I ran on the 383 for a while, and it made maybe 320hp tops.

On the hp claim thing... take a cam with 230 @ .050" and put it in a 267 with a big, loud exhaust and you will have people thinking it makes about 300hp more than it does.

That's a good point. I think it's also how average Joe comes up with some of these outlandish numbers when they build an engine.
Example: Supermegahorsepower Cams builds a full-tilt race dyno mule engine designed around and using their latest cam design. It dynos at 600hp. Then they swap in a stock 267 or 305 cam and retest. Now it dynos at 400hp. So, Supermegahorsepower Cams can now make the claim that their grind is "worth 200hp". When, more accurately, a stock cam "costs 200hp". It's flawed and backwards logic.
The problem is that all parts manufacturers have a tendency to slant their claims to some degree. Every month there are countless magazine articles and tests that can be misinterpreted too if you aren't taking an objective view. That's how average Joe comes up with 1000hp 383s. "Well, I saw a 383 built by Car Craft that made 450hp. But mine uses a Supermegahorsepower cam so that should put me at 650. Then I used Ultrakickass roller rocker to get to 700. My headers were made by Fatty Mcbreathright which are worth an additional 100hp. Car Craft used an Edelbrock 750 for their build but I got a deal on a pair of Dominators so I would think that each one is getting me an extra 100hp."

...Whatever  .
