WILL A 87' CUTLASS FLOOR SHIFTER FIT A 85' 442?

first off..............your 85 442 was already floor shift anyways............why change to another. if its just to replace damaged console just switch the console, the guts are already there.

if ya don't have a bucket/console in that 442 already.............I don't think its a real 442. kinda confused as to the problem. your 85 442 should already be 4 speed (very slight possibility it was ordered a 3 speed?) floor shift car????

so all I can say is that if it was ordered as a 4 speed, whats the problem? if your shifter was bent/damaged and you need to replace more than the console, the only part on that 87 one that would be wrong is the part refered to earlier with the indents. 4 speed.....4 indents. 3 speed...... 3 indents

below is a link to a picture of the shifter/console blowup, and the part highlighted yellow #26......shifter lever index plate.
second picture is of the part that I modified from 3 to 4 speed. there are only two parts between 3 and 4 speed console cars that are different, the shifter plate indicater plasic (PRD21) and the part highlighted yellow #26......shifter lever index plate.

Hard to tell on my phone but plate looks like a 3spd. 4 spd would have 123and D

the top plate pictured is for a 3 speed. 4spd would have 12D the OD
Same difference d instead of 3 and then a big o with a d in it.

Umm, ok
My car is def a real 442, vim#9 and the whole thing,
Problem I have with the shifter is that when I bought the car the person who owned it
Before I did had replaced the original shifter with some racing type of shifter, ratchet or something like
That, I don't like the look, or all the pulling back I got to do to get it into drive, so I'd rather go
With the simple more original floor shifter.
I'll post Picts tomorrow to show what I mean.

Looks like you need a new console bucket/shifter tray, the factory shifter plate will just fall right into the hole, there's nothing to mount it to since it's been gutted.

sheeesh, so i need more than i thought?

If I were you I'd put a B&M Megashifter in it. As a matter of fact that's what I put in my 442.
They're easy to use and the top plate is even the same size as the stock console top plate.

It blows my mind that people actually buy stock shifters. They ****in suck...

i just looked the B&M Megashifter up, looks good and seems like it will fill that whole space i currently have on there.

x2
None of my cars have a factory T handle shifter, all have Lightning Rods
But even those can suck if not properly rebuilt or adjusted...
My 87 442 had lightning rods in it but now I just use the column since I'm stripping it down for restoration and I'll be putting in an NOS T handle shifter back into it for originality. Good think it won't see much driving...
