So Cal
Tried to search for this but got about 1300 results (?)!

I live in California and therefore subject to smog testing. Our 79 EC has a high output 5.0 from a 91 Trans Am. I have CARB approved Edelbrock headers - they mate to a larger Edelbrock Y tube going into the cat, but the cat back is stock right now.

Does anyone know if a Monte Carlo catback that splits at the rear of the cat will fit our Elky?

Thanks

In other words, are Monte Carlo and El Camino Wheel bases the same ... or close?

I'm pretty sure earlier generations of ECs used station wagon floorpans and frames. But did this hold true for the G body EC or is it the same wheel base as the MC and a Malibu coupe and a Malibu 4 door???

Kind of curious about that myself.
I have heard 2 different stories on that.
One is they share the exact wheelbase and the other said it was an inch longer for the sw and ec.
Either way, I can't really see why it would not fit.
If it really comes down to it, just add an inch or two of pipe.

Adding an inch or two (or 3 or 4) can get a bit messy when you don't weld. Guess I have no choice. No one makes anything for the EC. I can get a catback with 2 1/8 splitting at the cat, going into two Flowmasters, over the axle and straight back to each side exiting at the rear. $255 Aluminized - OK for So Cal. Might paint them with hi temp anyway.

i thought the only difference between the frames between them was behind the rear axle, the same with the wagons.... i THINK

That's the "other" thing I heard. Hope you're right. If true, a straight extension is a piece of cake. Might even add one of those dual outlet on each pipe to make up the difference ... if there is any. We have a roll pan that makes the rear about 5+ inches shorter.

Thanks. This EC was a one owner until my 86 year old Dad gave it to my son for his 16th Birthday. My Dad had lost his depth perception over the years so it wasn't a sweet as you would expect most one owners to be. It was so bad, my son preferred to ride the bus to H.S. I asked if we Foose-ized it a bit, would he drive it then? Then he got excited about it. We replaced the front fenders hood and bumper with FGlass, converted it from a 79 to an 81 front. Put in Cad El Dorado buckets then we turned it over for body and paint. He picked a lexus Blue Onyx Pearl. I had to light these pics so you could see the blue.

FWIW, the date on the pics is wrong - Feb 2007 we got it back from paint and body.[/img]

Thanks megaladon6, you're a man of few words .... er ... no words. But a website is worth a million words.

Pypes shows the EC and the MC interchangable AND the Pypes are mandrel bends too! Cool.

Thanks for the link
